앤으로서는 이제 모든 것이 끝난 것이나 다름없었다. 똑같은 벌을 받아야 할 열두 아이 가운데 자기만 벌 받은 것도 싫었지만 남자아이의 옆에 앉아야 한다는 건 더욱 싫은 일이었다. 더욱이 길버트 블라이스 옆이라니, 상처받고 모욕마저 당한 셈이어서 도저히 참을 수 없었다, 참으려 해도 헛일이었다. 앤의 온몸은 부끄러움과 노여움과 굴욕감으로 달아올랐다.
 
Depend upon it Marilla, she'll cool off in a week or so and be ready enough to go back of her own accord, that's what, while, if you were to make her go back right off, dear knows what freak or tantrum she'd take next and make more trouble than ever. The less fuss made the better, in my opinion.
앤은 일주일만 지나면 냉정을 되찾아 스스로 학교에 가겠다고 할 테니까요.
반대로 지금 강제로 학교에 보내면 더 큰 큰 소동이 벌어질지 몰라요. 더 복잡해지게 되죠. 복잡한 일이 자꾸 일어날 바에는 차라리 학교를 쉬는 게 나아요.

줄거리
앤은 즐겁게 학교들 다닙니다.
빨간 머리, 홍당무라고 놀린 길버트에게 화가 난 앤은 길버트를 석판으로 내리칩니다. 앤은 그 일로 벌을 받게 됩니다. 또 후에 점심시간 밖에서 놀다가 수업 시간에 간신히 도착한 앤과 친구들 중 앤만 대표로 혼나 갈 버트의 옆자리에 앉는 벌을 받게 됩니다.
길버트는 사과하지만 앤은 그 일로 학교를 가지 않습니다.
