마릴라는 지난 9년 동안 살이 빠져서 외모가 더 각이 져 보였는데 그것 말고는 변한 것이 거의 없었다. 전보다 희끗희끗해진 머리를 단단히 묶어서 틀어 올린 뒤 머리핀 두 개로 고정시켰다. 그 핀도 늘 쓰던 것이다. 하지만 표정은 많이 바뀌었다. 전에는 웃음기를 넌지시 띠는 게 고작이었지만 이제는 입가에서 유쾌함이 뚜렷하게 드러났다. 눈빛은 온화하고 부드러워졌으며 다정하게 미소 짓는 일도 많아졌다.

마릴라는 지난날을 돌이켜보았다. 갑갑했지만 불행하지는 않았던 어린 시절, 애써 숨겨왔던 꿈과 무너진 희망이 있었던 처녀 시절, 그 뒤로 이어진 지루한 중년의 삶 속에 답답하고 단조로웠던 회색빛 시절이 떠올랐다. 그러던 어느 날 앤이 왔다. 생기발랄하고 상상력이 풍부하며 활발한 이 아이는 애정 어린 마음으로 공상의  세계를 펼쳤다, 아이가 가져온 빛깔과 온기와 광채 덕분에, 황무지처럼 쓸쓸했던 삶에서 장미꽃을 피울 수 있었다. 마릴라는 육십 평생 자기가 진정으로 살아있다고 느낀 시절은 앤이 초록지붕집에 온 뒤의 9년뿐이라는 생각이 들었다.

살면서 처음으로 자제력은 잃을 만큼 깜짝 놀란 마릴라는 두 팔을 뻗어 앤을 꼭 끌어안았다. 그 바람에 안이 들고 온 꽃이 납작해졌다. 마릴라는 앤의 그리고 윤기 있는 머리자락과 사랑스러운 얼굴에 입을 맞췄다.

The year is a book, isn't it, Marilla? Spring's pages are written in May flowers and violets, summer's in roses, autumn's is red maple leaves, and winter a holly and evergreen.
한 해는 책 한 권과 같아요. 그렇죠, 마릴라 아주머니? 봄의 페이지는 산사꽃과 제비꽃, 여름에는 장미꽃, 가을에는 붉은 단풍잎 겨울에는 호랑가시나무와 상록수가 쓰일 거예요.
